Is one of the leading providers of BEng (Hons)
Mechatronics and MSc/PgDip Mechatronics
Engineering degrees in Britain. The university
is in the top third of UK institutions to secure
funding from the Engineering and Physical
Science Research Council (EPSRC), and is ranked
6th of 23 institutions receiving EPSRC funding
in London. Several of LSBU research centres are
involved in Mechatronics. LSBU has been a
leading provider of technical education since
1895. Currently the Faculty of Engineering,
Science, and the Built Environment has 4,000
students. The university has a very diverse
study body including over 3,000 international
students, many of whom come from the Middle
East. They learn in a stimulating and creative
environment. The Faculty and its staff has
excellent experience in e-learning methods and
tools.
The LSBU participates in
many European programmes from DG Education and
DG Research. There have been several TEMPUS
projects, two major ones coordinated by members
of the Faculty and others as partner
institutions. On the research side, the Faculty
has seven ongoing research projects from the 6th
Framework Programme. LSBU enjoys a long
tradition of strong links with industry, being
extremely active in the UK Knowledge Transfer
Partnership Scheme, a national programme and
undertaking consultancy. The project team
consists of Prof. Ken Rotter, Prof. David Gawne
and Prof. Emmanuel Ezugwu.
The Mechatronik e.V.
(MeV) Germany, founded in 1998, is a network
acting as a mechatronics communications
platform, in the region. Since 1999 the MeV has
regularly arranged meetings and contributed to
several international workshops. The goal of
the MeV is the exchange of experiences of the
university teachers in the following fields:
newly established courses, new teaching methods,
new practical training and work on projects,
establishment of new bachelor and master
courses, and the presentation and publication of
these courses. The MeV has practical attachment
links and joint courses throughout Europe, in
Asia and in the USA. The MeV is chiefly
concerned to establish an International Network
of Mechatronic Universities, with four envisaged
fields of cooperation: the exchange of
information, exchange programmes for students
and faculty members, joint activities for public
relations, and development of strategies in
didactics and methodology of mechatronics
teaching. This network would also provide
important support and links for Egyptian higher
education centres to established mechatronics
resources. The project team consists of Prof.
Martin Loffler-Mang, Prof. Hans-Jurgen Frieske
and Prof. Harald Loose.
