In the nineteen
eighties a group of Egyptian nationals comprising former
senior bureaucrats, educators, business people and
industrialists formed the Foundation of New Urban
Communities, a non-profit NGO aimed at promoting the
development of new urban areas of Egypt, which in 1988
became the Higher Technological Institute (HTI), the first university level
institute of engineering education in Egypt,
providing students with a mix of theoretical
knowledge and practical training. The mission of
HTI is to offer modern educational programmes of
the highest standards establishing strong ties
between academia and industry. HTI prepares its
students in an intellectually stimulating
environment which undergoes continuous
improvement for careers, flexible enough to last
a life time. HIT currently offers 7 types of
engineering training and is the model for many
new universities in Egypt. In 1999 the Institute
developed a mechatronics undergraduate course,
and now offers a BSc in Mechanical Engineering
with Mechatronics specialisation. Currently,
this specialisation has the largest intake of
students of all departments of the institute.
HTI also offers comprehensive courses in
managerial and soft skills as part of a flexible
credit hour system. However, being a part of
fast developing field the Mechatronics course
requires restructuring and modernisation in
order to become compatible with the Bologna
Process regulations and to adopt the ECTS
system. The HTI implementation team consists of
Prof. Mostafa Sabet, Prof. Mohamed El
Safty and Prof. Yehia Hendawy
