Bochum University of Applied Sciences (BUoAS) (Germany)

Is one of the pioneers of mechatronics teaching and was the first university in Germany to establish a Mechatronics course with a separate degree in mechatronics engineering, in 1993.  Well- established links with many high-tech industries in the industrial belt of the central Ruhr area allow high knowledge transfer opportunities with partner educational facilities, and also provide an ideal geographical and academic location for foreign “gap-year” students for development of integrated industrial based learning techniques.

BUoAS offers Bachelors and Masters Qualifications and in 1996 it developed the KIA co-operative system incorporating diploma studies with a simultaneous apprenticeship scheme, in co-operation with around 45 industrial partners in the region.  The University also has links with international institutions in France, England, Turkey and Luxembourg, and China, Korea and Singapore. It also holds a prominent position within European mechatronics networks. BUoAS is the initiator and one of  the leading organisers of the "International Network of Mechatronics Universities". The Network is responsible for organising the annual "International Workshop on Research and Education in Mechatronics" (REM). BUoAS has links to the majority of European higher education establishments and institutions involved in mechatronics.

An integral part of BUoAS and its institutes is the specialisation in the areas of academic methodology conception for engineers, the transfer of social and communicative, personal and methodological competencies as well as the assistance of entrepreneurial students to establish businesses, and the training of academic staff. The BUoAS implementation team consists of Prof. Rolf Biesenbach, Prof. Martin Sternberg, Prof. Reiner Dudziak.
